Community Impact Grant Spotlight: Fantasy Playhouse

Writer's picture: Melissa DavisonMelissa Davison

Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy (FPCTA) provides theatre arts access through production, education and outreach, reaching tens of thousands of residents annually, the majority of whom are children and youth. FPCTA enriches the lives of children and families through theatre and arts education, encouraging students to become self-confident, academically successful, creative-thinking citizens who are more likely to invest in their communities as adults.

FPCTA’s core programs include live children’s theatre productions, classes, camps, workshops, private lessons, and educational outreach through after-school classes, touring programs and a workforce development partnership with Alabama A&M University.

Recognizing the transformative power theatre arts can have in the life of a child, FPCTA prioritizes theatre arts access for all by engaging local under-resourced and differently-abled communities.

During 2024, FPCTA welcomed over 1000 students and their families into the creative learning spaces established within Madison City Limits:  afterschool classes at Madison Elementary, Little Madison Academy, and Dublin Park as well as Summer Camp at Bob Jones High School. Students took part in all levels of performing arts and technical theatre training; honing self confidence as well as improving reading comprehension, collaborative learning, time management, creative problem solving, public speaking and STEM skills associated with scenic, costume, lighting and sound design.

FPCTA received a 2024 Community Impact Grant of $1750 from MVP to support their children's theater programs.

"Fantasy Playhouse is so grateful to MVP for their support of our programming in Madison City!" said Karen Mockensturm, FPCTA CEO. "This financial grant award helps us to offset costs related to our after-school classes and summer camp programming in Madison, which allows us to keep our tuition pricing affordable and enables us to provide assistance to under-resourced families."
